Grange Park Primary School 1952 - 2009

1951 Grange Park Junior School opened with Mr Clayton as Headmaster. There were 5 classes. The first classes were taught by:
Miss Barwood
Mr Marwell
Mr Edgaves
Mr Maddock
Miss Eadie

The school log includes entries about the conditions of the buildings and discussions with the architect. Another entry states that children were warned against encouraging dogs to accompany them to school, the Jolly Farmers dog has been in about five times in the past three weeks.

1952 Grange Park Infant School opened with Miss Margaret Booker as the Headmistress. Mrs Wall was the first deputy. There were three classes, making 92 children. School dinners were cooked in the school kitchen from 1952. Gradually the infant school increased to 6 classes. The sizes of classes were over 40.
The first classes were taught by:

Miss Zatter 40 5 year olds
Mrs Wall 34
Miss Powell 23

The official opening of both schools was in November 1952. This was performed by the Rt. Hon. Iain Macleod MP, Minister of Health.

1953 Coronation Day in June , was celebrated with each child receiving a silver coffee spoon. The school received five elm garden seats carved with the Royal Cipher.
The school log has entries of staff marriages, sickness, concerts, harvest festivals, dental inspections, strikes and special events. Photos of concerts and entertainment can be seen around the school. Parents did not attend sports day.

1957 The first inspection of Grange Park The school was inspected by Mr. Shelby on 13th February 1957.

1959 Miss Kelly became Deputy Head of the juniors.

1960 Royal Wedding On May 6th 1960 the school was closed for the wedding of Princess Margaret.

1961 The school expands. The school numbers increased due to the building of the Roundhill Drive estate and Rushey Hill. It was interesting to read about job shares in 1961 with teachers bringing there own pre- school children in with them.

1965 in April ,The London Borough of Enfield came into existence.
There was a holiday for the Magna Carta on 12th July 1965.

1969 In July, eighty children went to the Florida cinema Enfield to see the film of the investiture of the Prince of Wales .
1969 School closes for training. On the 14th July all Primary Schools were closed for staff to attend a course on decimal currency.

1971 Mrs Wells was appointed Deputy Head of the Infants.
Monday 20th November the Royal Silver Wedding Anniversary holiday, life size picture of the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh at the end of the corridor, the Queen's dress was done in milk bottle tops (from infant school log). On February 18th, it was the school's 21st birthday, a large birthday card was made and signed by all children and adults. A special assembly was held and each child received a sweet.

1973 Royal Wedding. On 14th November 1973 there was a holiday for Princess Anne's wedding.
Mrs Booker retired with a school party for 90 guests, held in the school dining room. Mrs Irene King became the new infant headmistress. The school library was opened for the first time in the infants.

April 1975 - There was a break in, the only things missing were
a box of matches and a paper knife!
Mrs Malcolm, the school nurse, came for a cleanliness inspection!
Glenys Botten represented the school, when the Civic Centre was opened by the Queen Mother.

1977 The Junior School inspected by Her Majesty's Inspectors.
There was a birthday assembly in the Infants to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the school, Margaret Booker came and presented her painting of the view from our playground.

1977 Mr Robin Lansley became Head of the Junior School and in April 1978 Mr Ron Lupton became the school caretaker.

1978 First moves to establish a Parent's Association.

1981 Four mothers came in the morning to help with various jobs in the school. This was the start of parental helpers in school.

1983 First Computers arrive.

1986 Amalgamation of Infant and Junior schools September
The Headteacher was Robin Lansley and the Deputy Head was Dorothy Wells. The schools were joined with a corridor, a new staffroom was built to accommodate all the staff. Sinks were installed in classes 1987. The LEA partnership scheme was started and Inset days started. They were known as 'Baker Days' after Kenneth Baker the Secretary of State for Education.

1986 School picnic to celebrate the Royal Wedding of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson was held.

1989 Dorothy Wells retired and Barbara Drinkwater became Deputy Head.

1994 Robin Lansley retired. Bridie Weston became Headteacher.

2000 The school is inspected by Ofsted.

2001 Bridie Weston left Grange Park, Barbara Drinkwater was Acting Head for a term. The ICT suite opened

2002 Paul Smith was appointed as Headteacher with effect from January 2002.

2005 The School was inspected by Ofsted

2006 In July Barbara Drinkwater retired as Deputy Headteacher

2006 Cheryl Salmon was appointed acting Deputy Headteacher pending Alyson Cullen's appointment in January 2007.

2006 - 2007 The most successful year in the school's history on the sports field with the football team winning three trophies, the tag rugby team, four trophies and finishing third in the national tag rugby competition at Rugby School. In addition, there were trophies in the girl's cross-country and 2nd & 3rd places in the open competition of the borough gymnastics competition.

2008 At a ceremony at Chace Community School,Linda Lawrence was presented with the 2008 award for the governor making the most outstanding contribution to education in Enfield. This award is just recognition for the time and effort Linda has given to the school over many years. Linda currently supports 3CS on a weekly basis and is chair of the Curriculum Committee.

At the same ceremony, Mel Hilbrown was presented with a plaque in recognition of his many years of service as a governor at the school.Mel is chair of the Premises Committee.

2008 The school tag rugby team are losing finalists in the national tag rugby final played at Rugby School. They have the honour of playing in a curtain raiser at Twickenham prior to the England v Italy Six Nations international.In the same year Y5 pupils play tag rugby at Wembley prior to Australia playing the Barbarians.


2009 The school's advanced gymnasts represented Enfield in the London mini-youth games at Crystal Palace. Competing against youngsters from across London, the team won three silver and two bronze medals.

2009 The school became a link school with Saracens RFC.

2009 Cathy Bunt was appointed as Assistant headteacher.
