Come Learn with Me

From September 2015, assessment of children’s skills and knowledge will be made using ‘I can’ statements matched to the new national curriculum in reading, writing, maths and science. These statements will also be available at the front or back of books so that children are fully aware of their next steps in learning.

Ongoing assessment for learning allows teachers, lesson by lesson, to evaluate the attitudes, knowledge, understanding or skills which children are developing so that teaching can be planned appropriately and gaps addressed. Children will typically progress from ‘developing’ skills and knowledge to being ‘secure’ over the course of the academic year. Those who make greater than average progress will demonstrate that they are ‘extending’ their skills and knowledge across the curriculum.

Systematic recording of assessment information will enable teachers to summarise children’s progress and attainment at a given point in time e.g. termly.

Examples of ‘I can’ statements are available below.
